If both partners are currently in Australia and planning to marry while applying for a Spouse Visa, the team at Marriage Bureau of Victoria and Melbourne Marriage Registry has extensive experience assisting couples through this process.

Our Commonwealth-registered marriage celebrants conduct fully legal wedding ceremonies that meet all requirements under Australian marriage law. Many couples choose our services when preparing documentation for their Spouse Visa application.

While we are happy to guide you through the marriage process, please note that our team cannot provide immigration advice. Visa matters should always be discussed with a Registered Migration Agent or Immigration Lawyer.

What we can do is assist you with lodging your intention to marry and organising your legal wedding ceremony in Australia.

Step 1 — Lodge Your Notice of Intended Marriage

The first step in getting married in Australia is lodging a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) with an authorised celebrant.

This document acts as your legal permission to marry.

Once the NOIM has been:

• completed
• witnessed
• lodged with the celebrant

your ceremony can usually take place one month later.

The NOIM lodgement fee is $175 (non-refundable).

Identification Documents Required

When lodging your NOIM, you will need to provide identification.

If you were born in Australia

• Passport or original birth certificate
• Photo ID such as a driver’s licence or proof of age card

If you were born overseas

• Passport or overseas birth certificate

If you have previously been married

• Divorce certificate
• or death certificate of former spouse

If any documents are not written in English, they must be translated by an accredited translator.

Approved translators can be found at:
www.naati.com.au

Your celebrant must sight the original documents before the ceremony takes place.

Booking Your Wedding Ceremony

Once your NOIM has been lodged, you may book your wedding ceremony from one month after the lodgement date, or any time within 18 months.

Ceremonies may take place in our Melbourne registry ceremony rooms or at another location if preferred.
